  • 7 Key EV and EV Charging Innovations in Australia (2026)

Vehicle-to-grid technology and expanding infrastructure are just a couple of the exciting breakthroughs in the electric vehicle industry.

We love seeing these EV innovations as they represent measurable progress toward a greener, cleaner Australia and world.

Here are 7 of the electric vehicle innovations in Australia we are most excited about right now.

7 Key EV and EV Charging Innovations in Australia

  1. Bidirectional Charging (V2G)
  2. Smart Charging
  3. Improved Battery Technology
  4. Improved Infrastructure
  5. Improved Recycling Options
  6. LieNA® Technology
  7. Increased Vehicle Choice

1. Bidirectional Charging (V2G)

One of the biggest advancements in the EV industry is bidirectional charging. This technology enables energy from EVs to flow back to the grid or homes.

Once implemented, this technology would turn EVs into mobile batteries, with benefits including:

  • Enhanced grid stability and resiliency
  • Backup power for homes
  • Strong support for renewable energy
  • Reduced infrastructure costs
  • Allow consumers to actively participate in stabilising the grid and contributing to environmental gains

Trials are underway for bidirectional charging technology, with the market projected to advance rapidly in 2026.

2. Smart Charging

Smart charging is another EV advancement we’re particularly excited to see expand. This technology has the potential to streamline the charging process, reduce grid strain, and reduce energy bills.

With advancements in smart technology, EV charging is no longer plug it in and wait. Smart charging is revolutionising the charging process, enabling communication between your EV charger and other systems.

For example, smart chargers can communicate with your solar system, home, and even your energy provider. Then, it makes automatic adjustments to how and when your electric vehicle charges to optimise energy usage.

Charging your EV when electricity is cheapest, such as when the sun is shining or during off-peak hours, offers several benefits:

  • Streamlined charging experience
  • Reduced grid strain
  • Optimised charging
  • Lower energy bills

3. Improved Battery Technology

Faster-charging batteries, more range, and improved efficiency? Yes please!

Several battery advancements are changing the EV industry, with the most compelling being Solid-State batteries. This technology relies on solid electrolytes rather than traditional lithium-ion batteries. This solid-state battery offers several advantages, including:

  • Higher energy storage capabilities
  • Lighter
  • Safer
  • Faster charging times
  • Longer range
  • Reduced charging stops

Although solid-state batteries are still being perfected, this advanced technology is well underway. Solid-state EV batteries are expected to become available commercially within the next few years.

4. Improved Infrastructure

EV infrastructure is growing rapidly due to an increase in public fast-charging stations and government support. Although rural areas still have gaps in EV infrastructure, we expect positive changes to continue.

ARENA’s Driving the Nation program is one of the key initiatives supporting improvements to EV infrastructure in Australia. Learn more about their efforts here:

5. Improved Recycling Options

Australia is working on improving recycling options for solar batteries through several efforts, including:

  • Millions of dollars of funding through the federal government to create a National Solar Panel Recycling Pilot Program
  • Improved recycling infrastructure
  • Designated solar panel recycling sites
  • Increased mandates for importers and manufacturers to manage batteries and solar panels that are at the end of their lifespan
  • Stewardship schemes, such as the National Battery Stewardship Scheme to support sustainable local technology

6. LieNA® Technology

Lithium Australia and ANSTO collaborated on a first-of-its-kind lithium extraction technology, known as LieNa.

LieNA (Lithium eXtractable by NAtural) technology employs a revolutionary process to extract lithium using more sustainable and efficient methods. Learn more about this world-first lithium extraction technology here: Australia’s lithium and critical minerals industry | ANSTO.

7. Increased Vehicle Choice

For years, Tesla felt like the only name in the EV industry. Now, electric vehicles are expanding into a wider range of options, partly due to regulation changes from the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

These changes penalise manufacturers that have high-emission fleets, incentivising the production and sales of more EV options. An influx of new models hitting the market in 2026 should help drive EV prices down as competition strengthens.

In 2026, we expect to see a broader selection of electric vehicles, such as:

  • Utes, such as the electric Toyota HiLux EV and the Isuzu D-Max
  • Budget hatchbacks
  • Vans, such as the Kia PV5
  • Performance cars and sedans
  • An increasing number of plug-in hybrid options becoming available.
